Speaking of your squeeze page, don't make the dumb mistake of having things on your page other than your offer and call to action. You don't want to distract your visitors with AdSense ads or other banners. You just want them to get enticed by your offer and sign up!
That's it for your squeeze page. Now on all your other pages, slap in your opt-in form. Usually putting it on top increases conversions, but in some cases, you might want to put it in a side-bar.
You can also use plugins like Platinum SlideIn (if you are on Wordpress) to grab your visitors by their eye-balls so they simply can't miss your opt-in. Platinum SlideIn basically makes a “bottom bar” slide onto your page when it is loaded. The bar stays there even if your visitor scrolls down. It goes away only when he signs up and you can choose on which pages to place it.
These are few tips to grab the attention of your visitors. But let's get a bit into the actual human psychology. Most people will act out of desperation, a need for a quick solution. If you can provide it to them, don't you think they will give you their email address in exchange of it?
Thing is, your visitors will never know the value of what you are offering them unless you communicate it to them. Think of the content of your squeeze page as a “mini-salesletter”. Make it appealing, rise their curiosity levels, highlight the benefits they'll get. It doesn't have to be huge or over-hypey.
